India. A powerhouse of potential.
Presenter Adrian Simpson finds that if India can make use of the technology it is renowned for exporting, then its economic future looks very positive indeed.
India has the 2nd largest population in the world and a fast growing economy that wields real international influence. And while connectivity in this diverse country is under way, it is still waiting to flourish. Despite providing connectivity services for the rest of the world, uptake among Indian businesses and from the government has yet to take a real hold.
Starting in Delhi, Adrian finds that many ordinary people have embraced the benefits of the mobile phone in their work and social lives. Increasing connectivity though, is seen as a responsibility of the Government. At the department of Telecommunications, we hear about plans to increase mobile phone use, internet, broadband and 3G as well develop India as a hub for telecomm manufacturing facilities.
Both of the main political parties have promised to deliver broadband connectivity, even in rural areas within five years. Here, Nokia Siemens Networks global initiative ‘Village Connection’ is already at work, significantly reducing the cost of building such networks.
However, young people are already discovering the power of connectivity. Youth for Change is a young political group who uses SMS and internet technology as the best and cheapest method to reach people with their message.
Next, Adrian joins a class of teenagers who receive extra Saturday afternoon classes on the internet using computers supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks. Initiatives like this that provide future careers in the ICT industry.
Travelling north to a Nokia Siemens Networks operations centre Adrian finds that the facility can run any network, anywhere in the world. This includes the Vodafone network in Australia.
Entrepreneurs are invariably smart users of connectivity. Adrian meets a clothing supplier who shows how quick and easy it is photo Adrian’s shirt on his phone, sends the picture to a supplier so he can get matching material sent back.
In this absorbing documentary, Adrian discovers a land where the opportunity is vast, so long as they can take the technology services they offer to others, and do it for themselves.
